Xingyiquan is so unbelievably cool. But try as I may, I doubt that even one out of the hundreds of readers who hit this blog every day, or even of those who've already got the books, have tasted even the barest salt lick of this art's coolness. I'm not blaming the customer! It's my fault that I still haven't found the way to convey this practice adequately.
After a long period of disciplined work, you'll someday be able to drop the physical, to overcome the siren call that this art seems to emit. targeting your inner 'cheesy karateka'. Just about everybody thinks they need to physically and mechanically power the Xingyi 5/12 fists and styles. But that's so totally, absurdly, comically wrong! It's like a secret joke the old masters were playing, hiding the coolness of their art in plain sight. We're not getting it because we cover our own eyes. We want to appear macho at any price, even at the cost of losing the art altogether.
Anyway, after a while, after you've dropped the physical tension, you'll eventually come to understand the 'chamber' effect. There comes a time when the body area from inguinal creases to collarbones, also including your arms and hands, is completely suffused with this internal goop! It's soooo cooool to feel!! It's powered by the lower body (red line up to orange in the pic) and radiates out through the chamber area (orange line to yellow in the pic). It's like there's a super-compressed thick yet soft yet radioactively powerful material crammed (but comfortably!) into that chamber and it's continually pressing with full radical symmetry at the boundaries of the body unit (at every point along the perimeter of the 'chamber' area in the pic).
Whoa! Holy Shit! Then your practice of Xingyi or Tai Chi whether ZMQ or Chen is totally transformed. Talk about addictive. There's no way I can convey the coolness of this chamber effect in words.
And no - please - spare me: it is NOT fascia or tendons or ligaments or breath or any other simple-minded materiality like that. God spare me having to ever hear that bullshit any more than I've already had to endure. Jesus! Better off dead! Wait - better off drunk?
Anyway, out of everything I've tried to teach and present, once you are able to at least relax a little bit (using the earlier stuff I put out, particularly ZMQ practice is pretty much mandatory to even have a ghost of a chance at that) then the actual keys to unlock this 'chambering' thing are probably the essential set of more advanced and turbo-charged methods listed below. I held those back initially because I thought I should reserve the very coolest stuff for ... well, for what? Pointless. So now I'm laying (most of it!) out there as below:
- Dark Fire Five Element Staff (recent film)
- Xingyi Crushing (recent seminar and film)
- Spiral Centering (recent seminar and film)
I almost think I should hit the keyboard just one more time, write one more book where I go deeply into this final topic: ICE (Internal Chamber Effect). Stop me before I key again! Because who'd pick it up, who'd give a shit? People really don't want to read anything these days. Recently I've come to understand that firmly, finally and deeply. It's a hard pill for us writer types to swallow, but it's the cold truth, no ifs ands or buts.
